Serious (theoretical) questions

So I'll be teaching a semester of Literary Theory next year and I have serious questions.

1. If you teach grad students: what do you wish your students had learned about literary theory?

2. If you have taught a theory class: what works? What doesn't?

3. If you have taken a literary theory class: what was most helpful? Least helpful?

Fave assignment in an intro to theory class: analyzing The Yellow Wallpaper from three theoretical perspectives.

Good idea. Viewing one work through several theoretical lenses will be an important part of the class, although I haven't settled on a specific work yet. Something relatively short and yet open to multiple approaches, like "The Yellow Wallpaper," would be ideal.
