Instead of taking the exam, why don't we all just take a nap?
A tempting request to be sure, but I had one objection: I don't know how to grade a nap.
That's okay, my student said. We can come up with a rubric.
Which is why we spent the last few minutes before the start of class discussing what items might appear on a nap-grading rubric. Everyone agreed that pajamas should earn style points, but students were divided about whether points should be added or deducted for snoring. Maybe consider the style of the snore?
The most novel suggestion was that dreams should be evaluated based on how well they illustrate realism, naturalism, or literary impressionism--an excellent segue into the exam on that very topic. So my students got down to work, and if any of them took a nap during the exam, I certainly didn't notice.
