Facebook tells me that I've photographed blooming trilliums in our woods at this time of year in the past, but this year it looks like spring ephemerals are arriving a little late. Our woods at home are currently abloom with hepatica and spring beauties, while the woods at Lake Katharine reveal just a few tiny Dutchman's breeches blossoms. But it's really exciting to see what's on the way: tons of trout-lily leaves popping up in wet spots and wide swaths of blue cohosh and bluebells just getting ready to burst their buds. Trilliums are coming--I can feel it in my bones--but for now we'll enjoy the incipient ephemerals and eagerly await their glory.
